Groundhog Traits

Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are commonly found in St. Clair County, Michigan. These burrowing animals are known for their stocky bodies, short legs, and thick fur that varies in color from brown to gray. Groundhogs typically weigh between 5 to 14 pounds and can grow to about 16 to 26 inches in length. They are known for their impressive digging skills, creating extensive burrow systems that can reach depths of up to five feet. These burrows serve as shelter, storage for food, and a safe-haven from predators.

Groundhogs are herbivorous and enjoy a diet comprised of grasses, legumes, fruits, and vegetables, making them a common sight in gardens around St. Clair County. They are diurnal creatures, meaning they are most active during the day, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. Groundhogs hibernate during the winter months, which helps them conserve energy when food is scarce. As spring approaches, groundhogs emerge from their burrows and are often seen basking in the sun or foraging for food.

Groundhog Warning Signs

Groundhogs can become a significant nuisance for homeowners, particularly when they establish their burrows in gardens or yards. One of the key warning signs of a potential groundhog problem is the presence of freshly dug holes in the ground, typically ranging from 6 to 12 inches in diameter. Additionally, you may notice gnaw marks on wooden structures, vegetable plants, or shrubs, indicating that these rodents are not only present but also actively feeding on your landscape. Another telltale sign is the appearance of flattened areas of grass or foliage, which suggests that groundhogs are repeatedly traversing the same paths in search of food or refuge.

Their burrowing activities can undermine the foundation of structures, leading to soil erosion and potential plumbing issues. In gardens, groundhogs are notorious for munching on a wide variety of plants, including vegetables, flowers, and shrubs, resulting in significant loss of plants. Their burrowing can create hazards such as collapsed tunnels, posing risks for pets and children playing in the yard.

When are groundhogs most active?

In St. Clair County, Michigan, the most active seasons for groundhogs occur in late winter and early spring, specifically from late February through April. This period marks the time of year when these burrowing animals emerge from their hibernation and begin to forage for food after the long winter months. Summer months are when groundhogs increase activity foraging to build fat reserves for the next hibernation.

We had our dogs sprayed by a skunk, we called Can Catch and they came out to set traps. We thought the issue was behind the house but was actually in the front. The traps were checked daily and two skunks were caught and removed. Very professional very knowledgeable and highly recommend.
