Mole Traits

Moles are small burrowing animals known for their ability to create extensive tunnel systems that they dig in search of food. Female moles produce 3 to 5 young typically born between March and April. Moles are insectivores and feed primarily on insects and earthworms. Moles are woodland creatures, but have moved into lawns that are watered and well kept.

Mole activity is most evident during the spring and fall months when they are more actively foraging for food. During this time, homeowners in St. Clair County may notice raised ridges in their lawns, a telltale sign of mole activity. While some might view moles as pests due to their digging, it’s essential to recognize their ecological contributions. Moles help to enhance soil structure and promote healthy plant growth. Implementing humane deterrents and promoting biodiversity can ensure that these unique mammals continue to play their role in the local ecosystem.

Mole Warning Signs

Moles pose significant challenges for homeowners, and recognizing the early warning signs is crucial to managing a potential problem. One of the most common indicators of a mole problem is the appearance of raised, uneven mounds of soil in your yard, which are created as moles push dirt to the surface while tunneling. You may notice shallow surface tunnels that resemble narrow ridges in the grass. These signs often indicate an active mole presence, and if left unchecked, the mole population can rapidly grow, leading to extensive damage to your lawn and garden.

The damage moles cause goes beyond just unsightly mounds and disrupted grass. Their tunneling behavior can lead to root damage for plants and flowers, as they uproot vegetation in search of insects and grubs. This disruption can weaken or even kill your plants. Moles can also attract other pests, worsening the issue.

When are moles most active?

In St. Clair County, Michigan, moles are most active during the spring and fall seasons. As the ground thaws in early spring, moles emerge to search for food, primarily earthworms and grubs, leading to noticeable signs of their presence like raised tunnels and mounds. During the mild autumn months, moles are busy preparing for the winter, which can result in increased tunneling activity as they forage.

We had our dogs sprayed by a skunk, we called Can Catch and they came out to set traps. We thought the issue was behind the house but was actually in the front. The traps were checked daily and two skunks were caught and removed. Very professional very knowledgeable and highly recommend.
