Opossum Traits

The opossum is a nocturnal animal, easily recognized by their white face, pointed snout, and long, hairless tail. They typically weigh between 4 to 14 pounds and can grow up to 33 inches long, including their tails.

Opossums are solitary animals and tend to be more active during the night. They are excellent climbers, and can often be found in trees or shrubs, where they seek refuge from predators. Opossums are also known for their unique defense mechanism—playing dead when threatened, which can deter potential threats. In St. Clair County, they adapt well to urban environments, often foraging through trash bins or backyards in search of food.

Opossum Warning Signs

If you notice signs of opossums in your area, it’s crucial to take action quickly to prevent potential issues. Common warning signs include overturned garbage cans, unusual noises at night, and finding droppings that resemble those of large rats. Since they’re nocturnal creatures, their activity often occurs in the dark, making it essential to pay attention to sounds coming from your yard or attic. If you spot an opossum rummaging through your trash or nesting near your home, it’s a clear indicator that they might be settling in for an extended stay, leading to more significant problems.

The damage caused by opossums can be substantial. They can tear up insulation in your attic, chew through wiring, and create unsightly nests that promote mold and pest infestations. They may also transmit diseases to pets and humans through their feces and urine. Beyond structural damage, the presence of opossums can attract other pests, making your home even more susceptible to infestations. Early detection and effective removal strategies are essential to mitigate the risks associated with these unwelcome visitors, ensuring your home remains safe and secure.

When are opossums most active?

In St. Clair County, Michigan, opossums are most active during the warmer months, particularly in spring and summer. As temperatures rise, they emerge from their dens in search of food and mates, taking advantage of the abundant resources available during this time. Spring marks the beginning of their breeding season, leading to increased activity as males compete for females. By summer, opossums can be seen foraging in backyards and gardens, drawn by the plentiful fruit and insects available.

We had our dogs sprayed by a skunk, we called Can Catch and they came out to set traps. We thought the issue was behind the house but was actually in the front. The traps were checked daily and two skunks were caught and removed. Very professional very knowledgeable and highly recommend.
