Raccoon Traits

Known for their bandit-like masks and ringed tails, raccoons are a resourceful and adaptable critter commonly found in St. Clair County, Michigan. Raccoons are opportunistic feeders and can thrive in a variety of settings – including both rural and urban areas. Raccoons are omnivores, whose diet typically consists of fruits, nuts, insects, and small animals, which provides them with many options for food sources. Their dexterous front paws help with their foraging abilities, enabling them to manipulate objects and open containers. In their journeys, raccoons often find themselves in residential areas in search of food, particularly during the late spring and summer months when young are born.

Raccoons are nocturnal animals, using the cover of night to search for food. They create dens in hollow trees, abandoned burrows, or even attics in human dwellings. In St. Clair County, raccoons are most active during the mating season from December to February, with females giving birth to litters of 3 to 5 young in the spring. The young remain with their mother for about 6 months, during which they learn essential survival skills. Raccoons are generally solitary creatures, but they can sometimes be found in small groups if food sources are abundant. Their intelligence and adaptability make them a remarkable species in Michigan’s diverse ecosystems.

Raccoon Warning Signs

Raccoons can quickly become a nuisance when they decide to invade your property. One of the first warning signs of a potential raccoon problem is the presence of overturned trash cans or scattered food debris. These intelligent animals are known for their dexterity and can easily access unsecured garbage, leading to a mess in your yard. Additionally, look for signs of raccoon tracks, which may appear as distinct paw prints in mud or soil, indicating their regular movement around your home. Nocturnal noises, such as scratching or scuffling sounds in the attic or on the roof, can also be a clear indicator that raccoons have taken up residence nearby.

The damage caused by raccoons can be significant and costly if not addressed promptly. They’re able to chew through vents, insulation, and ductwork, creating potential entry points for other pests and leading to structural damage over time. Raccoons can also pose health risks by spreading diseases. Their tendency to tear apart gardens, landscaping, and outdoor equipment in search of food can further add to property damage possibilities. Recognizing the warning signs and taking proactive measures can help prevent raccoon infestation and protect your home from their destructive behaviors.

When are raccoons most active?

In St. Clair County, Michigan, raccoons are most active during the spring and fall seasons. As temperatures begin to warm in early spring, they will emerge from their winter dens in search of food, drawn to the abundance of insects, fruits, and other natural resources that become available. This period also coincides with their mating season, leading to increased movement as males search for mates and females prepare for the arrival of young in late spring. In the fall, raccoons ramp up their foraging as they prepare for winter, gathering food and fattening up in anticipation of the colder months, which results in heightened activity levels as they scavenge in urban and rural areas alike. Overall, spring and fall present ideal conditions for observing these clever and adaptable mammals in action.

We had our dogs sprayed by a skunk, we called Can Catch and they came out to set traps. We thought the issue was behind the house but was actually in the front. The traps were checked daily and two skunks were caught and removed. Very professional very knowledgeable and highly recommend.
